You can do a lot with you dog, depending on its breed and age, says trainer Nikki Moustaki, author of The Bird Market of Paris: A Memoir. But most healthy canines, from Great Danes down to Chihuahuas, can handle sprint intervals—maybe three sets of three 20-second sprints with 10 seconds’ rest—without a problem.
“Sprinting kicks up the heart rate and allows for moments when you can offer your dog water and see if he wants to keep going,” says Moustaki. It’s great for discipline, too. “Encouraging your dog to sprint with you enhances your bond.”
